Women's Basketball Team Drops Home Game To Creighton

DES MOINES, IOWA - A career day from freshman Kayla Person (O'Fallon, Mo.) wasn't enough to propel the Drake University women's basketball team to victory, Friday night, as Creighton took a 77-57 decision over the Bulldogs. Person scored a personal-best 13 points and pulled down a career-high-tying six boards in the loss.

"Kayla was a bright spot tonight," said head coach Amy Stephens. "It was a turning point for her in terms of her needing to score more. She did that tonight."

Senior Monique' Jones (Lee's Summit, Mo.) also tallied 13 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds while adding five steals.

"She [Jones] took some lumps in the second half," Stephens added. "But I thought she played extremely hard."

Creighton outscored the Bulldogs 19-7 in the first half's final 7:49 and used a 12-2 run during the closing three minutes, 51 seconds to extend a 40-25 halftime advantage. Drake's 15-point halftime deficit tied its 40-25 halftime shortfall against Illinois State (12/31) as its largest of the season.

The 20-point defeat tied the largest margin of defeat for Drake against the Bluejays. Drake previously lost to Creighton by 20 on Jan. 30, 2004. The loss also served as the worst home loss of the series for the Bulldogs, and tied a 20-point loss to Southern Illinois on Jan. 14 as the most lopsided defeat of the season.

The Bulldogs fell to 13-13 overall, 6-10 in the Missouri Valley Conference.

MVC Tournament seeding will be on the line when Drake hosts Indiana State on Thursday, March 4. Tipoff is at 7:05 p.m
