Drake rounds out its four-match season-opening homestand welcoming Iowa State and UIC to the Roger Knapp Tennis Center this weekend. The Bulldogs host the in-state rival Cyclones on Friday (Feb. 5) at 5:00 p.m. before entertaining the Flames on Sunday (Feb. 7) at 9:00 a.m.
A LOOK BACK: The Drake women's tennis team displayed a warrior's spirit but in the end came up short in a 6-1 setback to Kansas State on Sunday (Jan. 31) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs held late advantages at the top two doubles positions but were unable to capitalize as the Wildcats swept all three contests to claim the doubles point.
Kansas State took the first two singles contests at the Nos. 1 and 5 positions to assume a 3-0 lead before sophomore Gabriela Demos (Chesterfield, Mo.) registered a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Ana Gomez Aleman at the No. 2 position.
A day earlier, Drake finished short in its spring debut on Saturday (Jan. 30) as Kansas registered a 6-1 triumph over the Bulldogs at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
Freshman Manca Krizman (Solkan, Slovenia) led Drake to a pair of victories in the affair, including a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Sara Lazarevic at the No. 2 singles position.
She also teamed with Demos for an 8-6 win at the top doubles slot against Lazarevic and Ekaterina Morozova.
Nearly garnering a victory at the No. 3 singles hole was freshman Ali Patterson (Overland Park, Kan.), who rallied back from 5-2 and 8-6 third-set tiebreaker deficits before falling to Kunigunda Dorn, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
LAST YEAR: Drake came up short in its season-opening contest at Iowa State on Jan. 23, 2009 as the Cyclones bested the Bulldogs, 6-1.
The Cyclones swept all three doubles tilts to assume a lead they didn't relinquish.
The Bulldogs garnered their lone point in the affair at the No. 2 singles hole where Gabriela Demos won a three-set match over Tessa Lang, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (2).
An unexpected power failure at the Evergreen Racquet and Fitness Club forced the postponement of the women's tennis match between Drake and Illinois at Chicago (UIC) on March 8, 2009. The contest was in doubles play when a loss of electricity forced the match to be called. The Bulldogs trailed in the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles tilts, while the showdown on the second doubles court was all square at four.
