Bulldogs Come Up Short In MVC Opener, Fall 4-3 To Northern Iowa

DES MOINES, IOWA - In a match that came down to the wire, Northern Iowa spoiled the 2010 Missouri Valley Conference opener for the Drake women's tennis team with a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs on Sunday (March 28) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

Drake was hampered in its efforts to garner its sixth straight win by the absence in the line-up of freshman Ali Patterson (Overland Park, Kan.), who missed the match due to injury, forcing several Bulldogs to jump up in the rotation.

The Bulldogs, none-the-less, took the early momentum in the affair earning the doubles point on the strength of an 8-6 decision at No. 3 by junior Jessica Labarte's (Barcelona, Venezuela) and sophomore Earlynn Lauer (Wichita, Kan.) over Stefanie Sampaio and Phoebe Walker.

The Panthers earned triumphs at the Nos. 3 and 4 singles positions before sophomore Amanda Aragon (Fort Collins, Colo.) squared the affair with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Talia Jang-Stewart at No. 5.

Northern Iowa posted a win at No. 6 before Walker clinched the decision for the Panthers with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 triumph versus sophomore Gabriela Demos (Chesterfield, Mo.) at No. 1.

Freshman Manca Krizman (Solkan, Slovenia) closed out the scoring rallying to post a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Laia Gonzalez-Garrido on the No. 2 court.

Drake resumes conference action on Saturday (April 3) at Creighton in the first of four consecutive road league affairs.  Match time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
