Four Drake Softball Student-Athletes On MVC Scholar-Athlete Squad

DES MOINES, IOWA – Senior Bridget Shields (Iowa City, Iowa) and juniors Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) and Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) earned Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete first team accolades, the league announced Monday. Junior Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) earned honorable mention laurels.

Shields, an outfielder who carries a 3.95 grade point average in biochemestry/microbiology, was third on the team with a .271 batting average and second with 41 hits. Shields previously was named to the College Sports Information Directors ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII first team and was a first team MVC Scholar-Athlete last season as well. She also is eligible for the Academic All-America team, which will be released May 26.

DeLong registered a Valley-best 1.56 earned run average in 26 starts for the Bulldogs and earned first team all-MVC honors in the designated player/pitcher position for the second straight season. DeLong struck out a team-best 217 batters this year, the fourth-highest single season total ever at Drake. She carries a 3.54 GPA in Journalism and earned MVC Scholar-Athlete honorable mention accolades in 2009.
   
Pitcher Dordel, who has a perfect 4.00 GPA in accounting, went 15-10 with a 1.87 ERA this season for the Bulldogs. Dordel earned second team all-MVC accolades and was named to the State Farm MVC all-tournament squad two weeks ago. The junior previously earned CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII second team honors this season and was a first team MVC Scholar Athlete selection a year ago.

Mollohan, a catcher with a 3.59 GPA in secondary education, set the Drake single-season doubles record with 18 this season and led the team with 45 hits and a .294 batting average. Mollohan previously earned CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII second team honors and was named to the all-MVC second team this season.
