DES MOINES, IOWA -- The Drake football team concluded the first week of preseason camp Saturday with its first day of two-a-day practice at Drake Stadium.
"I really like this team," said third-year Drake head football coach Chris Creighton. "It has been a really good week. I like our unity, effort and attitude and we're getting better."
Drake concluded Saturday's final practice with a 20-minute controlled scrimmage.
"After five long days to have a two-a-day staring you in the face, I'm proud of the way our guys responded. I really liked our intensity today," Creighton added.
The Bulldogs have two-a-day practices scheduled for this Monday and Thursday as well.
Emphasis during the second week of practice will be on implementing the offensive and defensive schemes along with the continued development of special teams play.
"Next week's emphasis will be more on detail and executing on what we already know," Creighton added.
Ninety-eight players, including 41 freshmen, are participating in preseason camp.
"They bring lots of enthusiasm and energy," Creighton said. "Our upperclassmen are really impressed with their talent."
With the season opener against Lehigh Sept. 4, three weeks away, Creighton is pleased with the progress of his team.
"We have a lot of work to do, but I can't wait," Creighton added.
