GRAND FORKS, N.D.
- With a sweep over San Jose State (26-24, 25-16, 25-17) and a rousing five-set
victory over tournament host North Dakota (19-25, 25-17, 25-19, 24-26, 15-10),
the Drake University volleyball team moved its record to 4-0 on the season and
was crowned North Dakota Classic champion. Senior outside hitter Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa) tallied 11
kills against SJSU and a game-high 18 kills against North Dakota en route to
earning Tournament MVP honors.
Bys notched her 1,229th career kill on the night, putting her just three kills behind Eve Johnson's all-time Drake record of 1,232.
Bys also led the Bulldogs with 14 digs in the
championship game, one ahead of senior libero Alana Wittenburg's
(Readlyn, Iowa) 13. Wittenburg, who piled up 62 digs in four games, was named
to the all-tournament team. Senior outside hitter Alisa DeBerg Roth (Hudson, Iowa) notched nine kills against San Jose
State and eight against North Dakota to earn all-tournament honors as well.
"Angela [Bys] was consistent all weekend, both in front
and in the back row," said head coach Phil McDaniel. "Alisa [DeBerg Roth] did a
tremendous job for us offensively and also at the net defensively. Alana
[Wittenburg] sparks our back row. She was solid all weekend."
Drake dropped the opening set, 25-19, against North
Dakota after winning nine-straight to start the season.
Junior setter Caitlin
Johnson (Sycamore, Ill.) tallied a career-high 27 assists in the
championship game. Junior middle blocker Michelle
Reidy (Dubuque, Iowa) tallied seven block assists against the Fighting
Sioux and leads the team with 18 total blocks.
"Overall, it was a very good weekend for us," McDaniel
added. It's about making sure we play consistently. As long as our players stay
consistent, we can do some good things."
Drake has started 4-0 five times since 1995 (1995, '96,
2003, '08, '10).
The Bulldogs open their home slate Friday as the hosts of
the Hampton Inn Drake Invitational. Drake will meet Green Bay in a 7 p.m.
