DES MOINES, IOWA - The Drake University volleyball
team swept South Dakota (25-12, 25-18, 28-26) to extend its program-best start
to 12-0. The win gave Drake a 14-set winning streak, one short of the school
record set by the 1996 squad.
"It's certainly great that we can do that," said head coach Phil
McDaniel. "It shows we are playing at a high level. I know it won't last
forever, but we are enjoying it."
Senior
Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa) led the Drake offense with 15 kills.
"Angela
(Bys) had a solid game," added McDaniel. "She is seeing the court well. She has
been steady for us the whole season. "
Junior
setter Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill.) notched her fourth double-double of the season with 19
assists and 10 digs.
"She has been solid all year and she is a great defender," said
McDaniel. "She is one of the things that makes our offense run smoothly. She
had a good match today and it doesn't surprise me that she is able to get a
double-double in assists and digs.
Alana Wittenburg added 15 digs for Drake.
The third
set was the most contested as Drake had a 17-11 lead, but allowed South Dakota to
come back and for an opportunity at set point.
"We came out
strong in the third set but we lost focus for about ten points there," said
McDaniel. "I thought the team was able to get refocused and finish the set. "
The Bulldogs
meet Stephen F. Austin tonight at 7:30 in the final game of the Hampton Inn
Bulldog Challenge.
