DES MOINES, IOWA -
Freshman Brittany Schuling
(Bondurant, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrar) scored a goal and added three assists
leading Drake to a 5-0 women's soccer victory over UMKC on Friday (Sept. 17) at
the Cownie Soccer Complex.
The
victory improved the Bulldogs to 4-2-2 on the year, while dropping the
Kangaroos' ledger to 1-6.
"After
being on the road for so many games, it was nice to get out to Cownie and play
in front of the home crowd," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented. "We
had players tonight that wanted the ball and worked to impact the game and good
things happen when our central players are hunting for the ball. We were creative in our movement up top and
our backs are comfortable starting or joining in on the attack. We made some adjustments defensively tonight
that still need some tidying up, but our players should feel good about earning
the shutout."
Junior
Danielle Figliola (Longmont,
Colo./Silver Creek) put the Bulldogs on the board first connecting on a header
inside the box off a corner kick from Schuling at the 28:36 mark.
The
lead grew to 2-0 following a nearly identical play in the 39th minute (38:30)
with senior Bailey Dorrington (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier)
placing a header past UMKC goalkeeper Jami Finnell off a corner by Schuling.
Schuling
capped a wild finish to the first half scoring on a breakaway with one second
left on the clock at the 44:59 mark to send the Bulldogs into the half leading
3-0. Freshman Generve Charles (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) recorded the assist on
the tally.
An
own goal at the 63:02 mark extended the advantage to 4-0 before freshman Megan Fisher (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny)
wrapped up Drake's offensive explosion with a tally in the 70th minute (69:12)
off a corner by Schuling.
Recording
her fourth shutout of the season was freshman Kalena Litch (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), who pulled in four saves
for Drake. Finnell pulled in a game-high
11 saves for UMKC.
The
Bulldogs outshot the Kangaroos, 23-7, led by a game-high four shots from junior
Lauren Berner (Omaha, Neb./Westside),
while Schuling, Figliola and sophomore Laura Moklestad (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) each registered three shots. Meagan Malloy paced UMKC with three shots.
"Tonight
was the start of our Parent's Weekend, so it was good to be able to reward some
players that haven't played much, but impact our program by working hard in
training every day," said Horner.
Drake
returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 19) hosting Wyoming in Drake Stadium. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
