CARBONDALE,
ILL. - The Drake University volleyball team earned
its first conference win of the year with a sweep of Southern Illinois (25-21,
25-19, 25-17).The Bulldogs improved to 15-1 overall and 1-1 in Missouri Valley
Conference play.
"I really like the
way the team bounced back tonight coming off a tough loss," said head coach
Phil McDaniel."It was good for us to come back with our experience knowing that
the conference is as tough as it is we needed a split."
Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa) registered her eighth double-double of
the year with 17 kills and 10 digs.
"Angela had a great
game," added McDaniel."She led our offense today."
Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill.) tallied 28 assists and was a dig away
from a double-double with nine.
Emily Heffernen (Manchester,
Iowa) and Michelle Reidy (Dubuque, Iowa) both added nine kills for the
Bulldogs. Drake hit .284 for the while Heffernen, Reidy and the Bulldog defense
tallied seven blocks and held the Saluki attack percentage to .098.
"Emily and Michelle
had excellent days in the middle for us," said McDaniel. "We were able to stay
in system for the most part and had a great afternoon."
Drake hosts Bradley
next Friday in a 7 p.m. matchup at the Knapp Center.
