DES MOINES, IOWA - Freshman
Megan Fisher (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) bent a free kick into goal in
the 39th minute (39:28) to score what proved to be the game-winning goal in
Drake's 1-0 women's soccer victory over Wyoming on Sunday (Sept. 19) at Drake
Stadium.
The tally propelled the Bulldogs' ledger to 5-2-2 on the
year, while dropping the Cowgirls to 5-5 overall.
"The turf was slick this afternoon so it made for a fast
game," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented.
"We were able to get hold of the ball and be dangerous off the dribble
or from service out wide in the first 75 minutes. The movement and organization of our backs defensively was
efficient, until the end when we made the game harder than it needed to be as
well losing our composure a little."
Wyoming outshot Drake on the afternoon, 13-7, led by a
game-high four shots from Ellen McCormick.
Fisher directed the Bulldog' attack with a team-best two
shots.
Freshman Kalena Litch (Northfield, Minn./Wayzata) recorded seven saves for
Drake, while Courtney Merkle collected three stops for the Cowgirls.
"Wyoming gained momentum and we were rather fortunate it
couldn't capitalize on its chances to close the game," Horner said. "We gain both experience and confidence
from today's game. Overall, this was
a great weekend for us and we're looking forward to North Dakota State on
Thursday and starting league play with Evansville next Sunday."
The Bulldogs continue their homestand hosting North Dakota
State on Thursday (Sept. 23) at the Cownie Soccer Complex starting at 7:00 p.m.
