DES MOINES, IOWA -
Drake senior outside hitter Angela Bys
tallied 12 kills in the Bulldogs' 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-15) victory over
Green Bay, Friday night, but none more meaningful than her fourth. With the
first Drake point of the second set, Bys tallied her 1,233rd career kill,
passing Eve Johnson (2003-06) for sole possession of the Drake career kills
record.
Bys added 15 digs to post her second double-double of the
season and lead Drake to a 5-0 start
"It's a great start," said head coach Phil McDaniel. "And
Angela getting the record is pretty special. She's worked hard since she's been
here and she'll continue to be a strong attacker for this program."
Junior outside hitter Mikayla Sims (Waterloo, Iowa) tallied 10 kills, including four in
the third set, and compiled a season-best .450 attack percentage.
Senior setter Susan
Clausen (Johnston, Iowa) and junior setter Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill.) collected 20 and 18 assists,
respectively. Clausen's total of 20 was a career high.
Senior libero Alana
Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa) tallied a season-high 32 digs, just three short
of her career high.
"We were a little sloppy tonight, but it was a good win,"
McDaniel added. "It tested our toughness."
The Bulldogs trailed late in the first set, 23-20, but
Sims, Bys and junior Michelle Reidy
(Dubuque, Iowa) powered Drake to five-straight points and a 25-23 first set
victory.
Drake took the second set, 25-18, after falling behind,
9-3, early. The Bulldogs dropped game three, 25-22 after a back-and-forth
battle as the score edged into the 20s. Drake started game four with a 5-0
advantage and never looked back, capturing the deciding set, 25-15.
"If we want to get to 6-0 or better, we'll have to be
much better tomorrow," said McDaniel.
Green Bay remained winless on the season, falling to 0-4.
Drake continues as host of the Hampton Inn Drake
Invitational tomorrow with a four-game slate starting at noon. The Bulldogs
open the Saturday schedule with a matchup against Southern Utah at noon.
