TULSA, Okla. - Junior Anis Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) turned in
a pair of victories to lead the Drake men's tennis team in the main draw of the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional on Saturday
(Oct. 22).
Ghorbel opened singles competition earning a 6-2, 6-3 upset of 13th-seeded
Andie Stenger of Nebraska. He then
moved into the round of 16 after dispatching Gabriel Townes of Bradley, 6-1,
6-1.
The Bulldogs also garnered opening-round triumphs from junior Ryan Drake (Hilton Head, Island, S.C.),
senior Cesar Bracho (Luque,
Paraguay), senior Jonathan Hadash
(Lapid, Israel) and junior James McKie
(Edinburgh, Scotland). None of the
quartet was able to move past the second round, each coming up short in their
second matches of the day.
Drake finished the day posting six wins in singles action, while failing
to register a victory in three doubles contests.
Drake will have junior Jean Erasmus (Windhoek, Namibia), sophomore Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England) and freshman Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia & Herzegovina) in consolation
singles matches on Sunday (Oct. 23) at 9:00 a.m., before Ghorbel takes to the
court for his main-draw tilt at 10:30 a.m.
