DES MOINES, Iowa - A late 17-0 Cyclone run was the difference in the Drake University women's basketball team's annual matchup with Iowa State. The Bulldogs fell, 71-64, despite a career night by junior Stephanie Running.
Drake (0-2) had its way with Iowa State (2-0) through the first 35 minutes of the contest. The Bulldogs led by as many as 13 in the second half and led by nine, 59-50, with six minutes remaining. The Cyclones spent the next five minutes on a 17-0 run that defined the game and gave them their second win of the season.
"Unfortunately, it's a 40-minute game," said head coach Amy Stephens. "We played well for 37 minutes, but when you play great teams, they don't go away."
Running (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) scored a career-high 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting and made nine of her first 11 shots of the contest. Most of Running's shots came away from the basket, echoing Rachael Hackbarth's (Colgate, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) 2009 performance against the Cyclones.
"I'm extremely proud of Steph's [Running] performance tonight," Stephens added. "She played the way we know she can play."
Hackbarth notched her second-straight double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman Kyndal Clark (Webb City, Mo./Webb City) totaled 15 points, including 12 in the second half, on 5-of-9 shooting in her first-career home contest. Clark scored five-straight points in the second half after Iowa State cut Drake's lead to four with 7:41 left to go.
"I expected it to go down to the wire," Stephens added. "We know we need consistency from our team."
Iowa State did its damage from the foul line, making 27-of35 on the night. Guard Nikki Moody and forward Chelsea Poppens combined for 14 points on free throws alone. Poppens equaled Running with 18 points - a game high.
The Bulldogs host Milwaukee Friday at 7 p.m.
