DES MOINES, Iowa -
Senior Rachael Hackbarth scored a season-high 26 points and pulled down 11
boards to power the Drake University women's basketball team to a 57-46 victory
against North Dakota State Thursday at the Knapp Center. The win put the
Bulldogs at 3-4 overall.
Hackbarth (Colgate, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) scored
eight-straight points to kick off a game-changing 14-4 Drake run at the 10
minute mark of the second half. The run turned a one-point, 42-41, Bulldog
deficit into a 57-46 Drake advantage.
"We played smart basketball during the last 10 minutes,"
said head coach Amy Stephens. "We defended well."
Hackbarth registered her fourth double-double of the
season and led three Bulldogs in double figures. She also passed assistant coach Linda Sayavongchanh (200-06) for sole possession of 19th place on the all-time Drake scoring list. She finished the night at 1,149 career points.
"She [Hackbarth] did a nice job tonight," said Stephens.
"She did a good job adjusting after missed shots."
Redshirt junior Brittnye McSparron (Apple Valley,
Minn/Eastview) totaled 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and freshman Kyndal Clark
(Webb City,Mo./Webb City) totaled 11 points.
"We need Kyndal [Clark] to score like that," Stephens
said. "She's got to be up there in double digits for us."
Drake used a huge second-half free throw advantage to
outscore North Dakota State 32-24. The Bulldogs tallied 13 of their 32 points
from the line, compared to just two for the Bison.
"That was definitely a bright spot," Stephens said about
Drake's performance at the line. "It allowed us to create separation and put
pressure on them."
The Bulldogs shot 45.2-percent from the floor during the
contest, while North Dakota State shot 39.6-percent. The game saw 22 lead
changes, tying a Drake record set Jan. 27, 2008 in a 66-63 home victory over
UNI.
