DES MOINES, IOWA - In match
that came down to the wire, it was junior Gabriela Demos' (Chesterfield, Mo.) victory at the No. 2 singles that propelled
Drake to its fifth straight victory with a 4-3 decision past North Dakota on
Sunday (Feb. 27) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
Drake swept the doubles competition with the duo of juniors Amanda Aragon (Fort Collins, Colo.) and
Earlynn Lauer (Wichita, Kan.)
clinching the point on the strength of their 8-3 triumph against Chelsey
Galipeau and Megan Sween at No. 3.
In singles, the Fighting Sioux claimed the first two matches to assume a
2-1 lead before the Bulldogs garnered wins from junior Jessica Aguilera (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and sophomore Manca Krizman (Solkan, Slovenia) at the
Nos. 4 and 1 slots.
Aguilera bested Hallie Welk, 6-3, 6-2, while Krizman bettered Stephanie
Petsis, 6-3, 6-4.
North Dakota earned a victory by Galipeau at No. 6 to square the match
before Demos crafted a come-from-behind, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, decision versus Erin
Kappers on court No. 2 to seal the triumph.
Drake concludes its seven-match homestand next weekend hosting Iowa
State and Air Force on Friday (March 4) and Sunday (March 6) at 4:00 p.m. and
11:00 a.m., respectively.
