WICHITA, Kan. - The Drake University women's basketball
team dropped a 72-58 Missouri Valley Conference matchup at Wichita State Sunday
(Feb. 27) at Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers (8-8) moved a half-game in front
of seventh-place Drake (8-9) in the MVC standings.
Junior Rachael Hackbarth (Colgate, Wis.) registered her 10th double-double of the season
with 27 points and 15 rebounds. The effort was her 13th career double-double,
second-straight and third in her last four games.
"She did a great job in the post today," said head coach
Amy Stephens. "I'm proud of her effort."
Senior Kristin Turk (Des Moines, Iowa) scored a season-low six points in the loss; her
first single-digit scoring effort since last season's game at Wichita State
(Feb. 5, 2010) and lowest single-game total since scoring three points in a
Jan. 22, 2010 loss at UNI.
"They [Wichita State] did a great job of denying her the
ball," Stephens added. "We tried to give her little breaks throughout the game."
The Bulldogs totaled 25 team turnovers compared to
Wichita State's 7. The result was a season-worst minus-18 turnover
differential. The Shockers scored 26 points off turnovers compared to Drake's
two.
Drake put together a quick, 8-0, run that changed a 15-10
deficit into an 18-15 lead at the seven minute mark of the first half. Wichita
State rebounded to outscore Drake 20-10 during the final seven minutes of the
half and take a 35-28 lead into the locker room.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 6-0 run to
pull within one point, 35-34, with 17 minutes remaining. Wichita State hit
back, outscoring Drake 16-7 over the next seven minutes to grab a 10-point,
51-41 lead at the 10 minute mark.
The Bulldogs employed a 9-2 run, powered by seven points
from Hackbarth, to pull within three, 55-52, with six minutes to go. Wichita
State answered with a 10-2 run to rebuild its lead to 11, 65-54 at the three-minute
mark.
Drake will host Creighton Saturday at 2 p.m. in its
regular-season finale. Seniors Turk and Ellie Ritscher (Keystone, Iowa) will be honored before tipoff.
