Wichita State Snaps Drake's Four-Match Winning Streak, 7-0

DES MOINES, Iowa - Its winning streak was halted at four as the Drake women's tennis team was dealt a 7-0 setback at the hands of Wichita State, the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions, on Saturday (April 23) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

The campaign wrapped up a very successful regular season campaign for the Bulldogs and sets the stage for Drake to enter next weekend's State Farm MVC Championship as the projected No. 3 or 4 overall seed. The league will release full tournament pairings late on Sunday (April 24).

The Shockers established the tempo of the match early sweeping all three doubles matches to assume a lead they didn't relinquish.

Despite Wichita State taking the first set in each of the six singles matches, the Bulldogs continued to show fight as both freshman Klavdija Rebol (Kranj, Slovenia) and junior Jessica Aguilera (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) battled back to claim second-set victories at the Nos. 3 and 4 slots, respectively, to force deciding third frames.

In the third set, Rebol came up short against Veronika Blaskova, 6-0, 6-7 (7), 10-4, while Carla Venticinque bested Aguilera, 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.

Drake now awaits the outcome of the remaining weekend matches to find out its opponent on Friday (April 29) at the State Farm MVC Championship in St. Louis, Mo.
