NORMAL, Ill. - The Drake women's tennis battled down to the wire before
suffering a 4-3 setback at Illinois State on Saturday (April 9).
The final outcome proved to be the closest match between the
two schools since the Redbirds earned a 4-3 triumph over the Bulldogs in 2006.
The match was ultimately won in doubles as the Redbirds
swept all three contests to earn what proved to the deciding point in the
affair.
In singles, the lead swelled to 2-0 for Illinois State
before junior Gabriela Demos (Chesterfield, Mo.) garnered Drake's initial tally with a
6-4, 6-2 triumph over Phyllis Tigges at No. 2.
The Redbirds stretched the margin to 3-1 before junior Jessica Aguilera (Santa
Cruz, Bolivia) came up short in dropping a three-set decision against Ariane
Maack at No. 4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, giving Illinois State the victory.
Despite trailing 4-1, the Bulldogs displayed a strong
tenacity to claw and scratch at the Redbirds as sophomore Manca Krizman (Solkan, Slovenia) and freshman Klavdija Rebol (Kranj,
Slovenia) posted triumphs at the Nos. 1 and 3 slots, respectively.
Krizman downed Aniko Kiss at No. 1, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-6,
while Rebol bested Carolina Abello, 6-7 (3), 6-0, 6-0.
Drake closes out the road portion of it schedule on Sunday
(April 10) with a 10:00 a.m. tilt at Bradley.
