SEPTEMBER 16, 2011
LARAMIE, Wyo. - Sophomore Brittany Schuling's (Bondurant, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrar)
successful penalty kick in the 87th minute (86:04) sent Drake's women's soccer
contest with Wyoming (4-4-1) into overtime where neither side was able to
capitalize in a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Friday (Sept. 16).
"I'm proud of our
effort tonight, to go on the road and play at over 7,000 feet and put away the
equalizer with four minutes on the clock says a lot about our team's
character," Bulldog head coach Lindsey Horner commented. "The goals haven't come easy for us
thus far, but we keep putting ourselves in the right position and that's the
mentality we need to have."
"We came out and
controlled the first 30 minutes in terms of possession and did a good job of
connecting through midfield, but weren't fully prepared once we broke pressure
to go to goal. Wyoming picked up the pressure in the last 10 minutes of
the first half, and made adjustments in the second half that made it harder for
us to keep the ball. Their goal against us was a very good goal. We
responded and had them on their heels for the last 10 minutes of the second
half."
The two sides battled
through a scoreless affair in the first half with Drake (2-3-3) owning an 8-5
advantage in shots.
The Bulldogs best
scoring opportunities came in the first half as junior Laura Moklestad (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) header
in the 21st minute (20:23) hit the crossbar and senior Danielle Figliola (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek)
missed on a 1v1 with the goalkeeper at the 24:45 mark.
The Cowgirls' offense
picked up in the final 45 minutes outshooting the Bulldogs 7-4.
The uptick in offense
paid off for Wyoming as Sheree Small headed a ball past sophomore goalkeeper Kalena Litch (Plymouth,
Minn./Wayzata) at the 63:24 mark to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead.
The advantage held
until Schuling's penalty kick was converted. The tally ended a more than 409-minute school record stretch
between goals for Drake.
Horner praised the
efforts of senior Angela Chigazola (Santa Rosa, Calif./Maria Carillo) and Figliola in helping
setup the penalty kick.
"Angela (Chigazola)
played a high ball into the box that caused their keeper problems and Danielle
(Figliola) worked her tail off to keep it alive and earned us the penalty
kick."
Neither side was able
to parlay their shots into scoring opportunities in overtime and the contested
ended in the Bulldogs' third tie of the season.
Ellen McCormick paced
all players with four shots, while Moklestad led Drake with three shots.
For the third time
this season and the fourth in her career, Litch pulled in a career-best 10
saves, while Carmen McDermott registered four stops for Wyoming.
The Bulldogs close
out their road swing with a 2:00 p.m. matinee affair at Northern Colorado on
Sunday (Sept. 18).
