OMAHA, Neb. - The Drake University volleyball team dropped a
3-0 (22-25, 18-25, 24-26) match at Creighton Saturday night in its opening
round game at the Creighton Classic. The match doubled as Drake's Missouri
Valley Conference opener, putting the Bulldogs at 0-1 in league play and 3-9
overall.
Junior Whitney Westrum (Waukee, Iowa/Waukee) again led Drake
in kills, tallying 10 for her fifth double-digit effort in the last six
matches. Westrum also totaled 10 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Down two sets to none, the Bulldogs rallied to a 23-20
advantage in game three. Following a Creighton timeout, Drake was outscored 6-1
to fall 26-24 and cede the match. The Bluejays notched kills on four-straight
series to win the game.
Bluejay setter and preseason first team all-Valley honoree
Megan Bober totaled 12 kills, 20 assists and 18 digs for her second
triple-double of the season.
As a team, the Bulldogs continued their season-long hitting
woes. Creighton outhit Drake .299 to .140 and tallied 17 more kills on the
night.
Junior Bentley Mancini (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley)
finished the match with nine kills on 31 swings.
The Bulldogs finish out the Creighton Classic with two
matches on Saturday. Drake meets UAB at 10:00 a.m. and faces McNeese State at
5:30 p.m.
