OMAHA, Neb. - The
Drake University volleyball team went 1-1 during its final day at the Creighton
Classic, falling in three sets to UAB (21-25, 18-25, 14-25) and winning a
five-set matchup against McNeese State (25-15, 25-18, 24-26, 19-25, 15-10). The
Bulldogs moved their record to 4-10 overall and remained at 0-1 in the Missouri
Valley Conference
Senior setter Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore
Community) totaled a career-best 67 assists against McNeese State, shattering
her previous mark of 44 set last year at Evansville. Johnson has totaled 503 assists
on the season - good for second in the MVC. Johnson earned Creighton Classic
all-tournament honors for her efforts.
Junior transfer Jadranka Tramosljanin (Ruma, Serbia/Postal)
turned in her best match as a Bulldog against McNeese State, totaling a
career-high 17 kills and adding 20 digs for her first double-double of the
season.
Junior Whitney Westrum (Waukee, Iowa/Waukee) registered 19
kills and 20 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Senior Michelle
Reidy equaled Westrum with 19 kills and added eight total blocks on the day.
Drake gave UAB a run in the opening game but eventually fell
25-21. The Blazers made short work of the tournament field, finishing 3-0 to
take the title. UAB downed host Creighton, 3-1, in the tournament final.
The Bulldogs travel to Carbondale, Ill. to meet Southern
Illinois next Friday in their second MVC road trip. Drake swings through
Evansville, Ind. for a date with the Purple Aces Saturday, Sept. 24. Both matches
start at 7 p.m.
