GREELEY, Colo. - For the third-consecutive game the
Drake women's soccer team garnered a double-overtime tie as the Bulldogs
collected a 2-2 draw at Northern Colorado on Sunday (Sept. 18).
"We were effective in
the first-half and executed the game plan well," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner
commented. "We came out strong in
the beginning of the second half and were unlucky to have a Megan Fisher goal
called back. They made adjustments in the second half and that paired
with our fatigue from playing overtime on Friday caused the game to open up
some."
"We haven't been in a
position to hold the lead until today, and during regulation we went away from
possessing the ball and it is difficult to manage the final minutes of the game
when we don't have the ball."
Junior Laura Moklestad (Des
Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) gave the Bulldogs the early advantage connecting on her
second goal of the season at the 13:54 mark, to provide Drake an early 1-0
lead. Earning the assist on the
tally was senior Danielle Figliola (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek).
The contest remained
in favor of the Bulldogs until Tara Rickenbach's header off a corner kick by
Madison Yoswa in the 65th minute (64:58) evened the affair at one.
Just over a minute
later (66:05), freshman Ashlie Stokes (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) recorded her first
collegiate goal off an assist by sophomore Kiah Swanson (Fort Collins, Colo.) to give Drake
a 2-1 lead.
The Bears though
fought back to square the tilt at two in the 88th minute (87:44) off a goal from
Yoswa.
Northern Colorado
peppered sophomore goalkeeper Kalena Litch (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) in overtime owning a 12-3
shot advantage, but neither side was able to crack the scoring column in extra
time before settling for a 2-2 draw.
"I'm extremely proud
of our efforts today," said Horner. "We were exhausted in overtime, but managed
to keep a clean sheet. We have one more non-conference game to fix a few
aspects of our play, and then we're tested righted away in conference with
Illinois State."
The Bears garnered a
34-15 margin in shots on the afternoon and were led by a game-high nine shots
from Kimmie Feidler.
Drake was paced by
four shots apiece from Moklestad and Stokes, while sophomore Brittany Schuling
(Bondurant, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrar) added three shots.
Litch pulled in nine
saves for the Bulldogs, while Kirstin Salminen recorded three stops for
Northern Colorado.
The Bulldogs close
out their road swing with a 4:30 p.m. affair at North Dakota State on Thursday
(Sept. 22).
