DES MOINES, Iowa - A golden goal by Stephanie Berube stunned the Drake women's
soccer team on Friday (Sept. 2) as South Dakota State (2-3) registered a 1-0
overtime victory past the Bulldogs (2-2-1) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
"Once again we put ourselves in a position to win the game,
but tonight we didn't convert these chances into shots on goal," Drake head
coach Lindsey Horner commented. "We have to
make their goalkeeper make saves and tonight that didn't happen. Kalena (Litch) again made a career-high
10 saves, which is an indication we are giving up too many shots. We have to be
harder to beat in the midfield and on the flank. At this point we have to
focus on Western Illinois."
The contest proved to be a back-and-forth affair as neither
side was able to crack the scoring column through the game's initial 90
minutes. The Jackrabbits owned a 14-10 shot advantage in regulation before
posting a 3-1 edge in overtime to outshoot the Bulldogs, 17-11.
In eight minutes of reserve duty sophomore Paige Dusek (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles
North) shared top-shot honors for Drake with junior Laura Moklestad (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) with
two shots apiece. Kayla Braffet
paced all players with a game-high six shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kalena Litch (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), the
current Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, for the second
time this season equaled a career high recording a team-best 10 saves. Kat Donovan pulled in four saves for
South Dakota State en route to collecting the shutout.
Drake returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 4) as the Bulldogs
host Western Illinois in a 1:00 p.m. matinee affair at the Cownie Soccer
Complex.
