DES MOINES, Iowa -
The Drake University volleyball team fell 3-1 (16-25, 16-25, 26-24, 18-25) to Milwaukee
in the Sheraton West Des Moines Drake Invitational's final match Saturday
night. Drake fell to 2-4 overall and finished 1-2 in the tournament - good for
third.
Milwaukee, the strongest team all weekend, took home the
tournament crown with an unblemished 3-0 record. Wyoming came out on top of a
three-team tie for second with Drake and IPFW.
Senior Caitlin Johnson logged her third double-double of the
season with 40 assists and 16 digs. Senior Mikayla Sims (Waterloo, Iowa/East)
led Drake with 11 kills in 33 swings while senior Michell Reidy (Dubuque,
Iowa/Wahlert) totaled 10 kills. Junior Emily Heffernen logged six kills and three
total blocks and was Drake's representative on the all-tournament team.
"The teams that were here were very evenly matched," said
head coach Tony Sunga. "It came down to who was mentally tougher and who could
sustain that toughness. If you executed
this weekend, you won."
After falling in consecutive sets, the Bulldogs emerged from
the locker room and took a 26-24 victory in set three to force a fourth set.
Reidy totaled five of her 10 kills in the game three.
"we made a choice to take things under our control at that
point," Sunga said. "We made a choice to change, but we couldn't sustain."
Milwaukee outhit Drake by nearly 100 points and suffered
seven fewer errors.
The Bulldogs travel to the Pioneer Classic in Denver Colo.
next weekend. Drake's first match is an 11 a.m. matchup against Missouri on
Friday.
