DES MOINES, Iowa -
Sarah Madden's serves were precise and Michelle Reidy's attacks were on-point Friday
night during the Drake University volleyball team's 3-1 (25-14, 25-21, 23-25,
25-20) Missouri Valley Conference victory over Indiana State. The win was Drake's
second-straight and moved the Bulldogs to 6-11 overall and 2-2 in the Valley.
Madden's (Van Meter, Iowa/Adel-DeSoto-Minburn) hot hand has
been a big reason for Drake's recent success. The junior set a career high with
25 digs against the Sycamores and shaped the match with her serve. The Bulldogs
scored 23 points with her on service Friday night.
"Having her back there makes us a
more solid defense," head coach Tony Sunga said. "When we made the switch, we
wanted Erika [Price] and Sarah [Madden] on the court at the same time. The two
of them have become solid defenders down the line."
Reidy (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert)
totaled 13 kills in 30 swings for a team-best .367 hitting percentage. Junior
Whitney Westrum (Waukee, Iowa/Waukee) led all players with 16 kills and added
15 digs for her sixth double-double of the season and second straight.
The
Bulldogs jumped on Indiana State early, taking the first set, 25-14, behind six
kills from Westrum, five kills from junior Bentley Mancini (Burnsville,
Minn./Apple Valley) and some nifty service by Madden. Drake scored
seven-straight points on Madden serves, turning a one-point, 12-11, advantage
into a 19-11 lead.
Senior
captain Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) turned in one of her best
matches of the season with 47 assists, 16 digs, two blocks and five kills.
Freshman
Erin Roggenburg (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) totaled six kills, including three in
Drake's 25-21 second-set victory.
"What
we've needed was another outside hitter," Sunga said. "Our outsides are gaining
experience and patience. With Roggenburg, what she does in practice has come to
fruition on the court."
The
Bulldogs host Illinois State Saturday at 7 p.m.
"The team feels good about maintaining momentum coming out of Evansville.
they're feeling confident. practice has been upbeat, but very goal oriented and
focused.
