Hackbarth Has Career Day In Winning Effort At Indiana State

Sunday, January 22, 2012

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Led by senior Rachael Hackbarth's (Colgate, Wis.) career day, the Drake women's basketball team rallied from an eight-point deficit to beat the Indiana State Sycamores by a count of 67-59 on Sunday (Jan. 22).

Hackbarth scored a career-best 32 points and tied a career high in blocks with four en route to powering the Bulldogs to victory.

During the contest, Hackbarth moved up the all-time scoring list at Drake passing both Jordann Plummer and Connie Newlin. Hackbarth now sits with 1,359 points. With her four blocks, she passed Missy Lange to move into fifth place with 91 swats.  She also pulled down 12 boards to extend her double-double streak to four.

We made free throws when we needed to, and my teammates got me the ball when they needed to,” commented Hackbarth.

Drake improved its ledger to 10-8 overall and a 4-3 mark in conference play. The Sycamores, who started off their conference season with a 4-0 record, have dropped three straight and now have a 10-9 overall record.

The Sycamores held a halftime lead of 31-28 over Drake as Brittany Shoen and Racheal Mahan combined for 19 of Indiana State's 31 points.

Indiana State had its largest lead of the game after a three-pointer by Deja Mattox made it 49-41 in favor of the Sycamores with 10:52 left in regulation.

After that trey, Drake went on a 13-0 run in the second half as the Bulldogs took a 54-49 lead. The run stretched to the 5:16 mark in the second stanza. Hackbarth had nine of the 13 points including a jumper that gave Drake a 50-49 lead, its first lead since early on in the contest.

“I'm so proud of our teams performance,” commented head coach Amy Stephens. "To be behind for a majority of the game and to hold onto the lead and to finish the game is a great feat.”

Sophomore Morgan Reid (Kansas City, Mo.) registered a double-double for the Bulldogs with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Brittnye McSparron (Apple Valley, Minn.) added 10 points.

The Bulldogs will launch a four-game homestand beginning with a date versus Bradley on Friday (Jan. 27.). Tipoff at the Knapp Center is at 7:05 p.m.
