MOINES, Iowa - The Creighton Bluejays defeated the Drake
Bulldogs, 3-0, Saturday night at the Knapp Center in the team's annual Dig Pink
match. Set scores were 25-17, 25-17 and 25-11.
Cassie Effken (Lincoln, Neb.) had seven kills and added three digs,
three block solos, one block assist and one service ace for Drake (3-18, 2-8
MVC). Bentley Mancini (Burnsville,
Minn.) had seven kills and recorded five
digs. Sarah Madden (Van Meter, Iowa)
finished with a match-high 24 digs and moved into 10th in program
history in career digs with 845.
Kelli Browning led Creighton (18-3, 9-1 MVC) with 12
kills and added six block assists. Megan Bober had a match-high 28 assists in
addition to seven kills and eight digs.
The Bluejays took a 14-8 lead in set one after a Drake
attack error and the Bulldogs took their first timeout of the night. Creighton
extended its lead to 22-12 before Drake recorded three-straight blocks to cut
the deficit to 22-15 and force the Bluejays to take their first timeout.
Creighton won the set 25-17, after a kill by Leah McNary.
A kill and an ace by Effken tied the second set at 6-6. The
two teams traded points until the Bluejays ripped off three-straight points to
take a 19-15 lead, their largest of the set to force a Bulldog timeout.
Creighton scored six of the last eight points to win 25-17.
Creighton took the third set, 25-11 for the match win to
stay tied at the top of the MVC standings with UNI, which defeated Illinois
State Saturday night.
The Bluejays finished with 20 blocks and 56 digs. The Bulldogs
had seven blocks and 53 digs.
Drake next hosts Southern Illinois Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
and Evansville the following night at 7 p.m.
