GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Drake women's basketball team lost an overtime thriller to North
Dakota, 67-63, Saturday afternoon at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand
Forks, N.D. Three players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs led by Mary Pat Specht (Shawnee, Kan.) with 14 points.
Drake
charged back from a four-point halftime deficit to take a 10-point lead late in
the second half but North Dakota rallied to force the game into overtime. Nicole
Smart knocked down a three-pointer with 10 seconds in overtime that put UND up
66-63.
Kyndal Clark (Webb City, Mo.) missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game
and UND rebounded the miss to hold on for the win and improve to 3-4 on the
season. Drake falls to 3-5 on the season with the loss.
"We
ran out of gas at the end today in overtime," Drake head coach Jennie Baranczyk said. "Kyndal and Carly Grenfell (York, Neb.) hit shots
that should have been game winners at the end of regulation but we didn't do a
good job on defense and they answered. Congratulations to North Dakota who
played a great game and hit some big shots."
Drake
trailed 28-22 after Emily Evers made a layup to open the second half but the
Bulldogs responded with their own run to get back into the game. Drake went on
a 23-8 run that lasted nearly 10 minutes to storm back in front, 45-36, with
10:27 left in the game. UND answered with its own run to tie the contest at
49-49 after Megan Lauck's jumper with 5:04 remaining.
Grenfell
made a three-pointer with one minute left in regulation to put Drake ahead
54-51 but Smart answered with her own three to tie the game at 54-54 with 43.0 seconds
left. The Bulldogs went back in front 56-54 with 27.0 seconds on the clock
after Clark made a layup but once again UND answered. This time with a layup by
Alyssa Wall with 17.0 seconds to go that tied it at 56-56. Drake had a chance
for the win but Clark missed a jumper and the game went into overtime.
Drake played
the overtime period without Morgan Reid (Kansas City, Mo.), who fouled
out in regulation. The junior forward, who is the team's leading rebounder,
only played 19 minutes today because of foul trouble. She finished with six
points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Clark and
Grenfell each had 12 points. Freshman Ashley Bartow (Sun Prairie, Wis.)
had another outstanding game off the bench for the Bulldogs finishing with seven
points and six rebounds.
Evers had a
double-double for North Dakota with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Madi Buck had one
as well with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Luack scored 13 points and Smart had 10
points.

mater, the Iowa Hawkeyes and former Drake head coach Lisa Bluder to the Knapp
