- The Drake Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker to the Northern Iowa Panthers,
68-66 on Sunday at the McLeod Center. Freshman Kyndal Clark (Webb City,

(Colgate, Wis.) added 20 points and a game-high 18 rebounds and she jumped
three spots on the school career points list.
Box Score | Overall Stats
The
senior center is now in 12th place on the Drake (14-14, 8-9 MVC)
all-time scoring list as she moved past both Julie Rittgers (1,559), Lindsay
Whorton (1,564) and Kristi Kinne (1,566) to 1,570 career points. Hackbarth had
her 14th straight double-double and 21st overall of the
season, which leads the country.
UNI
(16-11, 9-7 MVC) was led in scoring by senior K.K. Armstrong who had 23 points
and four rebounds and five assists. Redshirt freshman Brooke Brown added 18
points with three treys for the Panthers.
Drake
took a 32-25 halftime lead behind strong shooting from the field at 52.2
percent (12-of-23) and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the free-throw line.
Clark
has scored 20 or more points in the past two games and today she helped the
Bulldogs build a 12-4 lead to start the game with five points going into the
second media timeout at the 11:55 mark.
Coming
out of halftime, UNI used a 13-2 run in the first four minutes to go ahead
38-34. Morgan Reid (Kansas City, Mo.) hit a jumper to begin a 9-2 run
for the Bulldogs and go back in front 43-40. Brown tied it for UNI with a
three-pointer, but Amber Wollschlager (Milbank, S.D.) answered with her
own trey to force the first tie of the game, 43-43 with just over 11 minutes to
go in the game. In the last 11 minutes neither team would hold a lead bigger
than four points as they traded baskets.
Drake
had their final lead of the game, 54-51, after Clark knocked down two free
throws with 7:41 left in the game. UNI took the lead, 55-54 for good after a
Katelin Oney three-pointer with just over seven minutes to go in the game.
The
Bulldogs didn't back down though on UNI's senior day and only trailed, 66-64,
after a Clark jumper with 1:20 left in game.
Drake
forced a Panther's miss on the next procession and had an opportunity to tie or
go ahead but a jumper by Reid fell just short and UNI grabbed the rebound and
was immediately fouled. Armstrong missed the front end of the one and one and
Hackbarth rebounded to give Drake another chance.
After
a UNI foul and timeout, Hackbarth got a good look on a jumper but the ball
rolled out and Armstrong grabbed the rebound and Drake fouled the point guard
immediately. This time the senior knocked down both free throws to give UNI a
68-64 with just 12 seconds to go. The Bulldogs still fought back after Clark
made a layup to cut the lead to 68-66 with one second left.
Drake
immediately fouled Oney to send her to the line for two. She missed both and
Hackbarth heaved a three-quarter court shot that fell short and gave the
Panthers the win.
Reid
finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Oney scored 12 points with three
treys for UNI. Each team had three scorers in double figures in the game.
Drake
will return to action on Saturday, March 3 on senior day when they host the
Creighton Bluejays. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and Drake will recognize three
seniors: Hackbarth, Wollschlager and Alex Montgomery (Cannon Falls,
Minn.).
