Drake Drops In-State Battle Versus Iowa State, 5-2

MARCH 9, 2012

DES MOINES, Iowa - Junior Manca Krizman (Solkan, Slovenia) extended her singles winning streak to 17, but it wasn't enough to lift the Drake women's tennis team to victory as Iowa State registered a 5-2 triumph on Friday (March 9) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

The Cyclones swept the doubles competition to assume a lead in the match they didn't relinquish.

Iowa State posted wins at the Nos. 1 and 5 singles positions to extend its lead to 3-0 before the Bulldogs cracked the scoring column on the strength of a 6-3, 6-2 victory by junior Ali Patterson (Overland Park, Kan.) over Marie-Christine Chartier at the No. 6 slot.

After dropping the first set of her encounter with Ksenia Pronina at No. 2 singles, 7-5, Krizman roared back to take the second frame, 6-4, to force a winner-take-all super tiebreaker.  In the tiebreaker, Krizman establish an early advantage en route to posting a 10-5 decision to take the match, 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.

The victory gave Krizman her 20th singles win of the season, helping her surpass her singles win total for all of the 2011 campaign.

With its two singles triumphs, Drake also exceeded it total number of singles wins for all of the 2011 season.

Both teams wore pink uniform tops for the match as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness event in conjunction with the Greater Des Moines Tennis Association.

The Bulldogs return to action with a pair of Saturday (March 10) matches at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.  The Bulldogs will battle Gustavus Adolphus at 10:00a.m. before playing Nebraska-Omaha at 5:00 p.m.
