WICHITA, Kan. - The Drake
women's tennis team ran into a talented Wichita State team that was firing on
all cylinders on Saturday (April 21) as the 61st-rated Shockers earned a 7-0
victory over the Bulldogs.
Wichita State staked itself to all the scoring it needed registering a
sweep of the doubles competition.
Drake head coach Paul Thomson
credited the Shockers for playing an outstanding match to defeat the game
Bulldogs as Wichita State was consistently able to get its shots to fall and
that proved to be the difference in the contest.
Drake's best opportunity for victory came at the No. 3 singles position
where senior Gabriela Demos
(Chesterfield, Mo.) earned a 7-6 (7) tiebreaker win in the second set over
Lucia Kovalova to send the tilt to a deciding third set. In the final frame, Kovalova registered
a 10-4 triumph in the super tiebreaker to win the match 6-1, 6-7 (7), 10-4.
The Bulldogs close out their regular season with a 10:00 a.m. contest at
Creighton on Sunday (April 22).
Following Southern Illinois' loss versus Illinois State on Saturday
(April 21), a victory by Drake over the Bluejays could vault the Bulldogs as
high as No. 2 in the seeding for next weekend's State Farm Missouri Valley
Conference Championship in Omaha, Neb., as Drake, Illinois State and Southern
Illinois all own a 4-2 league mark with one match to play.
