CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Fueled by a pair of unanswered goals, Southeast
Missouri State (1-2-1) upended Drake's attempt at victory as the Redhawks
registered a 2-1 women's soccer triumph past the Bulldogs (2-2) on Sunday (Aug.
26).
"We went up a goal and were all over them for a span of 15
to 20 minutes, but when we're on the road we have to capitalize when we have
the run of play," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented. "It's exciting that we came out with
energy, got in their box and created chances, but we have to score goals and be
sharper and tougher to break down in our defensive third. So as long as we
continue to learn from these early season mistakes, these road swings will help
us in the long run."
The Bulldogs took an early lead in the contest, as Drake was
the recipient of an own goal at the 5:57 mark.
The advantage held until Erin Shulman netted the equalizer
in the 22nd minute (21:43) on a penalty kick.
Courtney Luehmann notched the game-winning tally for the
Redhawks at the 59:36 mark to account for the final 2-1 score.
Junior Generve Charles (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) led the Drake attack with
a team-high four shots, while juniors Brittany Schuling (Bondurant, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrar)
and Paige Dusek
(St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) added three and two shots,
respectively. Shulman paced
Southeast Missouri State with a game-high five shots.
Junior Kalena Litch (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) collected three saves for
the Bulldogs, while Renee Kertz recorded a game-high six saves.
Drake returns to action on Friday (Aug. 31) as the Bulldogs
close out a four-game road swing with a 6:00 p.m. tilt at South Dakota State.
