MOINES, Iowa - The Wichita State Shockers (7-3, 1-0 MVC)
defeated the Drake Bulldogs (0-10, 0-1 MVC), 3-0 Friday night at the Knapp
Center. The Shockers won with scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-17 in the
conference opener for both teams.
Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Platte (Mount Vernon, Iowa) led the Bulldogs with eight
kills and senior outside hitter Bentley Mancini (Burnsville, Minn.) added seven kills. Freshman setter Rebecca Brown (Bentonville, Ark.) paced
the Bulldogs with 16 assists and sophomore setter Halli Meyer (Bettendorf, Iowa) added nine assists.
Emily Adney had a match-high 14 kills and Elizabeth Field
added 13 kills. Chelsey Feekin had a match-high 39 assists.
In set one, Drake trailed 10-4 after a kill by Field before
the Bulldogs ripped off four straight points to force a WSU timeout, 10-8. Out
of the break the Bulldogs tied the game at 10-10 after a service ace by Brown
and a kill by Cassie Effken
(Lincoln, Neb.). The Shockers answered with a 5-0 run to force Drake to take a
timeout. Drake would get as close as 22-20 after a kill by Effken but the
Shockers used a 3-0 run to close the opening set.
The two teams stayed close during the start of the second
set as neither team held more than a one point lead until a kill by Ashley Andrade
put the Shockers in front 10-8. Drake cut the deficit to 17-14 after a WSU
attack error before the Shockers used an 8-2 run to take the second set.
The Bulldogs trailed 24-9 in the final set before a 6-0
run cut the deficit to 24-15. The rally fell short though after a kill by Adney
gave the Shockers the match.
Drake will host the Missouri State Bears Saturday night
at the Knapp Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
