CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Drake women's soccer team saw its school-record eight-game winning streak snapped on Thursday (Sept. 27) as the Bulldogs (10-2-1, 1-0-1 MVC) and Northern Iowa (6-7-1, 1-0-1 MVC) battled 110 minutes before each exited with a key Missouri Valley Conference point in a 1-1 double-overtime tie.

Drake, who was playing in its first road game in nearly a month, will take a nine-game unbeaten streak into its non-conference tilt at Western Illinois next Wednesday (Oct. 3).

"UNI was up for a battle tonight, and while we prepared all week for our players to come out and match the energy level, we found ourselves on our heels and and down a goal," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented.  "We knew this would be a tight game especially if we struggled to compete in the air, came out flat or gave them opportunities in restarts, unfortunately each of which we did." 

The Panthers broke into the scoring column first at the 5:00 mark when Kiki McClellan netted the goal for Northern Iowa off an assist from Sarah McHugh.

The lead was short-lived as Drake was the recipient of an own goal 33 seconds later that squared the contest at one.

"I believe we conceded our first restart goal of the season this evening," said Horner.  "I'm pleased that we responded immediately." 

Outshot in the affair, 21-9, including 7-2 on goal, the Bulldogs were unable to find the back of the net to extend their winning streak. 

Northern Iowa was led by a game-high six shots from Melissa Hagan, while Drake was paced by a three-shot performance from junior Generve Charles (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East).

"While there were moments we were dangerous, ultimately we played the way UNI wanted us to and it was ugly," Horner stated.  "Sometimes we will have to be direct, but we made some uncharacteristic mistakes for our team this year. We had five offsides, we settled for hitting the ball out of bounds when we could have swung it around, but we were trying to adapt."

Junior goalkeeper Kalena Litch (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) recorded six saves for the Bulldogs, while Erin Zaideman notched one stop for the Panthers.

"In the end, I believe our players understand that every MVC game is hard, especially on the road," Horner explained.  "We wanted to come home with points, and we got the result.  Although the players are a bit disappointed that we got a draw, as a team, we are in a good place when we earn a result on the road."

Drake returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 3) with a 3:30 p.m. matinee affair at Western Illinois.
