POWELLS POINT, N.C. - Junior
Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and freshman
Brady Richardson (Tulsa, Okla.) sparked the Drake men's golf team to a eighth-place effort with a 296 scorecard on Sunday (Oct. 20) carding scores of 71 and 72 over the opening 18 holes of the Outerbanks Invitational hosted by Old Dominion University.
“Dane (Worley) and Brady (Richardson) played well today shooting 71 and 72,” Bulldog head coach Matt Lewis commented. “The one thing we talked about was trying to get four good scores, so we were close to accomplishing this today.“
“It was around 60 and quite windy today, so conditions were challenging and par proved to be a pretty good score. I'm happy for the most part with our effort, it is close, but not quite what we wanted to accomplish, but it is a step in the right direction. I think we are in decent position and we'll try to improve tomorrow.”
Worley and Richardson are positioned in ninth and 14th in the individual standings after recording opening rounds of 71 and 72, respectively.
Sophomore Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) and redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) registered scores of 75 and 78, to stand 35th and 60th in the tournament standings.
“Both Will (McDonald) and Devin (Leland) played well, but struggled a little over their last few holes, but they turned in respectful first scores,” said Lewis.
Senior Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) rounded out the Bulldogs' efforts with an opening-round 82. He is tied for 82nd place entering the tournament's second round.
The Bulldogs continue play at the Outerbanks Invitational on Monday (Oct. 21) with the tournament's second round. Competition kicks off with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. CT.
DRAKE RESULTS: Dane Worley (71/T-9th), Brady Richardson (72/T-14th), Will McDonald (75/T-35th), Devin Leland (78/T-60th) and Connor Steele (82/T-82nd).
