LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Drake women's golf team continued its solid run of play at the Pat Bradley Invitational hosted by Florida International on Monday (Oct. 21) as the Bulldogs fired a 307 to enter Tuesday's (Oct. 22) final round with a 616 (309-307) scorecard, good for 13th among the 17 competing schools.
Temperatures climbed into the mid-90's at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club during the second round and Drake persevered through the sweltering conditions, posting four scores in the 70's, led by senior Hadley Jennings (Trenton, Mo.), who carded a 75. Jennings is tied for 21st place with a 36-hole mark of 148 (73-75).
“Hadley (Jennings) put together another solid round for us today,” Drake head coach Leanne Smith commented. “I was proud of Sarah (Browning) bouncing back with a 78 after struggling a little bit in her opening round.”
“It was a good round for us as a team. Our goal has been to get four scores in the 70's and we were able to accomplish that today.”
Four Bulldogs improved their opening-round efforts with only freshman Arianna Gastelum (Chula Vista, Calif.) losing a stroke, recording a 77 on Monday (Oct. 21). Gastelum enters the final round tied for 45th with a tournament total of 153 (76-77).
Drake received scores of 77, 78 and 83, respectively, over the tournament's second 18 holes from junior Danielle Brooks (Red Wing, Minn.), freshman Sarah Browning (Midhurst, Ontario) and junior Ashley Brooks (Red Wing, Minn.). The trio owns tournament scorecards of 156 (79-77/T-58th), 159 (81-78/T-72nd) and 169 (86-83/T-86th).
“I'm happy the team has continued to show improvement and get better with each round,” said Smith. “We're getting to where I thought we should be playing all fall and our success at the end of the season will give us something to build upon entering the spring.”
Drake concludes its fall campaign at the Pat Bradley Invitational on Tuesday (Oct. 22) with competition getting underway at 8:00 a.m. CT.
