POWELLS POINT, N.C. - The Drake men's golf team crafted their second-best round of the fall campaign on Monday (Oct. 21) carding a 294 at the Outerbanks Invitational hosted by Old Dominion University to move the Bulldogs into 12th place with a 590 (296-294) tournament scorecard.
“We played pretty solid for the most part today as everyone is playing well,” Bulldog head coach Matt Lewis commented. “I believe we gave back five shots on our final hole which kept us from turning a good round into a great one.”
Drake finds itself on a crowded team leader board as nine strokes separate eighth from 13th place in the tournament standings.
Redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) posted the Bulldogs' low round of the day registering a 72 to sit tied for 52nd place with a 36-hole total of 150 (78-72).
Junior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and freshman Brady Richardson (Tulsa, Okla.) shot identical rounds of 73 and find themselves separated by only one stroke in the overall tournament standings. Worley and Richardson are tied for 18th and 25th, respectively, with 144 (71-73) and 145 (72-73) tournament ledgers.
Sophomore Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) and senior Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) registered scores of 76 and 78 over the tournament's second 18 holes to maintain 151 (75-76) and 160 (82-78) totals.
“We have three guys playing well and we're trying to get that fourth and that'll be our goal tomorrow to get that fourth,” said Lewis. “I think we are in a good position heading into tomorrow and if we can get that fourth score we will be in pretty good shape.”
The Bulldogs conclude competition at the Outerbanks Invitational on Tuesday (Oct. 22) with the tournament's final round. Tee times start the action at 7:00 a.m. CT.
