POWELLS POINT, N.C. - On the strength of its lowest round (286) of the fall campaign, the Drake men's golf team concluded its efforts at the Outerbanks Invitational hosted by Old Dominion University on Tuesday (Oct. 22) with a 876 (296-294-286) tournament scorecard en route to earning a 12th-place showing.
“We were happy with the way we played this tournament as we got better each day,” Bulldog head coach Matt Lewis commented. “It is a good note to end our fall season on and hopefully it will give us a boost of confidence heading into our winter workouts and practice in preparation for our spring schedule.”
Redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) and junior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) each carded Drake season-low scores of 70 over the final 18 holes to pace the Bulldogs' efforts.
Worley registered Drake's top finish (T-14th) on the strength of a collegiate career-low 214 (71-73-70) scorecard.
Freshman Brady Richardson (Tulsa, Okla.) capped a strong fall campaign with a 218 (72-73-73) ledger, a mark that was good for a tie for 32nd place.
"It was great tournament for Dane (Worley) and it was good for Devin (Leland) to get back on path after a slow start to his fall," said Lewis. "Brady (Richardson) once again as a freshman played solid for us."
Two shots off his tournament pace was Leland, who registered a 54-hole score of 220 (78-72-70/T-36th).
Sophomore Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) and senior Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) recorded scores of 73 and 77 over the tournament's final 18 holes to garner 224 (75-76-73/T-56th) and 237 (82-78-77/87th) totals. McDonald's 73 represented his low round for Drake this fall.
The Bulldogs conclude their fall campaign traveling to Omaha, Neb., for a dual match versus Creighton nest Tuesday (Oct. 29). The showdown with the Bluejays will be contested at the Omaha Country Club starting at 1:00 p.m.
