Football Has 11 Named To All-PFL Teams

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – The Drake University football team had 11 student athletes earn All-Pioneer Football League honors, the league announced Tuesday.

Four Bulldogs earned first team honors, five were named to the second team and two garnered a spot on the honorable mention team.

On the All-PFL first team, the Bulldogs had a pair of defenders in linebacker John Hugunin (Oswego, Ill.) and defensive back Mike Ratelle (Edina, Minn.) after the pair earned second team honors last season.

Hugunin led the PFL in tackles with 10.3 tackles per game and ranked 13th nationally in tackles. All told, he racked up 113 total tackles, 67 solo with a pair of fumble recoveries. Ratelle reprised his role as one of the top safeties in the PFL with 65 tackles, the second most on the team and a team-high three interceptions and eight passes broken up. His 11 total passes defended ranked fourth in the PFL while his three interceptions were tied for sixth.

Sophomore punter Cam Bohnert (Edmond, Okla.) also earned first team honors following a season that saw him land 17 of his 50 punts inside the 20-yard line with another 14 being fair caught. He also boomed nine punts more than 50 yards for a season average of 38.9 yards per punt.

In his first season of competition, sophomore tight end Eric Saubert (Arlington Heights, Ill.) garnered first team honors after hauling in 47 passes for 549 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Against PFL competition, he had two 100-yard games against Butler and Valparaiso while scoring both of his touchdowns against league competition.

Drake five selections to the All-PFL second team include three defenders and two on offense in wide receiver Nick Rosa (Owasso, Okla.) and center Troy Whitmer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.). Rosa has led the Bulldogs in receiving each of the last two seasons and hauled in 56 balls for 858 yards and nine touchdowns this season. He ranked fifth in receiving yards in the PFL and 10th in scoring in his final season in the Blue and White.

Meanwhile, Whitmer anchored an offensive line that developed throughout the season to allow 254.6 passing yards per game and blocked for a pair of 500-yard offensive outputs in PFL play.

Drake's defense, ranked No. 1 in the PFL in scoring and total defense was led on the second team by fifth-year defensive line stalwart Brandon Coleman (Cary, Ill.). Coleman finished his career ranked in the top five in active FCS career leaders in sacks and tackles for loss and posted nine sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss with four forced fumbles in his final season to lead the league. His fellow lineman, Matt Acree (Shawnee, Kan.) also earned second team honors with five sacks on the season and 32 total tackles.

Junior defensive back Brad Duwe (Dubuque, Iowa) also collected second team accolades by recording 42 total tackles and matching a team high with three interceptions. His teammate in the backfield, junior Bob Quilico, Jr. (Schaumburg, Ill.) was named honorable mention after racking up 51 tackles in nine games.

Completing the Bulldogs' honorees on the honorable mention team was fifth-year senior Kevin Marshall (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) who battled through injuries his senior year to catch 27 passes for 171 yards with two touchdowns.

The Bulldogs finished the 2013 campaign with a 6-5 record for their 10th consecutive winning season. The announcement of postseason PFL honors continues throughout the week with the PFL All-Academic Teams being announced by the league on Wednesday.
