TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Kyndal Clark (Webb City, Mo.) scored a
game-high 20 points but the Drake women's basketball team couldn't overcome a
tough defensive effort by Indiana State as the Sycamores beat the Bulldogs,
59-48, Sunday afternoon at the Hulman Center.
Drake's
(7-15, 2-9 MVC) 48 points marked the ninth time this season the Sycamores held
a team to 50 or fewer points. Indiana State (14-8, 6-5 MVC) came into the
contest 21st in the nation in points allowed per game at 52.9.
Four
Sycamores scored in double figures led by Rachael Mahan with 15 points. Marina
Laramie and Anna Munn each added 11 and Taylor Whitley had 10.
Ashley Bartow (Verona, Wis.) had
10 points and seven boards for the Bulldogs and has scored in double digits in
the last two contests. Clark went 9-of-10 from the free throw line and nabbed
six steals, just one away from her career-high. Morgan Reid (Kansas City, Mo.) scored all six of her points in the
second half before fouling out. Sophomore Liza
Heap (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) started the second half and grabbed five
rebounds, dished out two assists and had one steal with no turnovers in 27
minutes.
The
Sycamores led by 21 points (40-19) in the second half after Whitley's free
throw with 15:37 left in the contest. Drake fought back outscoring Indiana
State 19-10 over nearly seven minutes to cut the deficit to 50-38 after a free
throw by Cara Lutes (Maplewood,
Minn.).
Following
Lutes' free throw, the teams traded baskets and Clark's layup at the 2:37 mark
cut ISU's lead to 56-44. On the Bulldogs' next possession, Clark had a good
look on a three-pointer from the right wing, but it was a little long off the
back of the rim and the Sycamores grabbed the board. Drake couldn't get any
closer as Indiana State held on for the win.
Indiana
State took a 31-13 halftime lead as they held the Bulldogs to a season-low in
points scored in the first half. Both teams battled ball control issues as the
Bulldogs committed 19 turnovers, their highest half total of the year, while
Indiana State committed 14. The Bulldogs and Sycamores each finished the day
with 30 turnovers.
The
Sycamores held the Bulldogs without a field goal for almost the final six
minutes of the opening half as the Bulldogs struggled from the floor, hitting
just 4-of-23 (17.4 percent) in the opening half. Clark paced Drake with seven
points.
Drake
shot much better in the second half as they hit 10-of-21 (47.6 percent) shots
and outscored Indiana State, 35-28.
The
Bulldogs return to the Knapp Center this Thursday, Feb. 14 as they host the
Wichita State Shockers at 7:05 p.m. In its next contest the team will host its annual "Hoops for
Hope" game when the Missouri State Lady Bears visit on Saturday,
February 16 at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs will sport special pink jerseys that

basketballs with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society. The first 500
fans will receive a pink "Hoops for Hope" t-shirt
and cancer survivors will be recognized at halftime.
