PEORIA, Ill. - The Drake women's basketball team dropped a 93-84, decision at
Bradley Thursday night in a wild back-and-forth game that featured 10 ties and
six lead changes. Sophomore Kyndal Clark
(Webb City, Mo.) paced the Bulldogs with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-15
shooting including three-pointers made.
Junior
Morgan Reid (Kansas City, Mo.)
scored a career-best 19 points and added 11 rebounds for her seventh
double-double of the season. Sophomore Liza
Heap (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored a career-high 12 points and pulled down five
rebounds in her third consecutive start. Reid added four assists, four blocks
and three steals.
Five
players scored in double figures for the Braves led by Michelle Young and Katie
Yohn, who each finished with 18 points while Des Moines native Shronda Butts
had 16 and Catie O'Leary had 15. Jenny Smith added 11 points.
"This
a tough one to swallow but you can't let a team score 93 points on their home
court and expect to win that's the toughest part," Drake head coach Jennie Baranczyk
said. "At the same time we didn't score the last three and a half minutes but
this is a learning moment and we had some great conversations in the locker
room after the game and we will be ready for Saturday."
Drake
(8-17, 3-11 MVC) held a four-point lead at 73-69 after a layup by junior Mary Pat Specht (Shawnee, Kan.) with
just over eight minutes to go but Bradley (11-13, 5-8 MVC) responded with six
unanswered to go in front, 75-73, its first lead since midway through the
opening half.
The
two teams traded baskets and a layup by Reid, tied it at 81-81 with 2:56
remaining in the game. It would be the final tie as the Braves outscored the
Bulldogs, 12-3, to close out the win.
The
Bulldogs held a 44-42 lead going into the halftime break behind balanced
scoring led by Reid, who scored eight points, grabbed nine boards, dished out
four assists, blocked three shots and nabbed two steals. Seven others scored
for Drake, who knocked down 15-of-25 (42.9 percent) from the field, including
6-of-13 (46.2 percent) from behind the arc. The Bulldogs finished 8-of-9 (88.9
percent) from the free throw line. It marked the first time this season the
Bulldogs held a halftime lead in an MVC road game.
Drake stormed out of the gate to start the contest
as Heap netted two three-pointers and the Bulldogs hit four overall to take an
early 18-6 lead at the first media timeout at the 15:57 mark.
"I thought we did a great job to start the game and to
start the second half," Baranczyk said. "We had some great energy but we let
them get a few too many offensive boards to help them get energy and get back
into the game. Overall I'm proud of our effort but I think there are a few
things we need to do differently. Give credit to Bradley, who is a good team
with some great players."
Drake's
84 points scored tonight are a season-high as the team finished 31-of-64 from
floor. The Bulldogs hit 14-of-18 from the line while Bradley, who came into the
night seventh in the nation in free-throw percentage, finished 24-of-30 (80
percent).
Drake's
next action is Saturday, Feb. 23 at Northern Iowa with tip-off set for 2 p.m.
against the Panthers. Listen to 1350 KRNT and follow live stats at www.godrakebulldogs.com.
