DES MOINES, Iowa - The comeback
for the Drake women's tennis team fell just short as Northern Illinois posted a
4-3 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday (March 2) at the Roger Knapp Tennis
Center.
The Huskies assumed a 1-0 lead after earning wins in all three doubles
matches.
The advantage swelled to 2-0 before the Bulldogs rolled off three
unanswered triumphs to retake the lead, 3-2.
Freshman Evy Van Genechten
(Antwerp, Belgium) began the charge besting Arantza De La Torre at the No. 3
position, 6-2, 6-2.
Fellow rookie Maddie Johnson
(Onalaska, Wis.) evened the affair at two after dispatching Cristina Alvarez on
the No. 5 court, 6-3, 6-3.
Surging the Bulldogs to within a point of claiming the victory at No. 6 was
sophomore Nell Boyd (Arlington
Heights, Ill.), who edged Stephanie McDonald, 6-3, 6-4.
Northern Illinois evened the contest at three with a win at No. 4 to
force a winner-take-all showdown at the No. 2 slot.
Freshmen Lea Kozulic
(Varazdin, Croatia) captured the first set in her showdown with Haley Dekkinga,
6-4, before her opponent overcame a second-set deficit en route to notching the
triumph and the match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Drake closes out its homestand on Sunday (March 3) as the Bulldogs entertain
Nebraska Omaha at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. Match time is slated for 1:30 p.m.
