DES MOINES, Iowa - A 75th minute (74:45) penalty kick by Iowa's Lana Bonekemper spoiled the 2013 debut for the Drake women's soccer team as the Bulldogs came up short in a 1-0 setback to the Hawkeyes on Friday (Aug. 23) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
Despite being outshot in the affair, 19-8, including 12-4 in the first half, Drake showed perseverance and patience battling Iowa end-to-end for a full 90 minutes in the contest looking to net an equalizer.
The Bulldogs got a strong effort in net from junior Andrea Swanson (Johnston, Iowa/Valley), who collected four saves in her Drake debut.
Senior Paige Dusek (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) paced the Bulldog' attack with a game-high four shots, while freshman Kayla Armstrong (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) added three shots.
The Hawkeyes were led by four shots apiece from Ashley Catrell and Cloe Lacasse.
Hannah Clark posted two saves for Iowa en route to notching the shutout.
Drake returns to action on Sunday (Aug. 25) as the Bulldogs host SIU Edwardsville in a 1:00 p.m. tilt at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
