Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Drake University volleyball team dropped a Missouri Valley Conference road match at Indiana State, 3-1, on Friday (Oct. 17) night.
Indiana State (12-8, 5-3 MVC) won by scores of 27-25, 25-12, 20-25 and 25-15 over Drake (9-10, 1-7 MVC).
Senior Amanda Platte (Mount, Vernon, Iowa) continued her strong play as she smashed a team-high nine kills along with eight digs and two blocks. Freshman Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa), who missed Drake's last two matches due to injury, had 11 digs, eight kills, four blocks and two service aces in her return to the starting lineup.
Set one was tightly contested, as neither team was able to build a large lead until Drake went up 18-15 after an ISU attack error. Drake held set point at 24-23 after a service ace by sophomore Michelle Thommi (Omaha, Neb.), but the Bulldogs failed to take the set as they scored just one more point. Back-to-back kills by Sarah Peterson gave the frame to Indiana State, 27-25.
The second set was all Indiana State as it cruised to a 25-12 victory behind 19 kills with just two attack errors. The Sycamore connected for a .368 hitting percentage, while holding the Bulldogs to just a .054 hitting percentage.
Drake bounced back with a 25-20 victory in the third set, which featured 12 score ties and five lead changes. A service error by junior Rebecca Brown (Bentonville, Ark.) gave Indiana State its final lead of the set, 16-15. However, the Bulldogs responded with four-straight points to pull away from the Sycamores as they clinched the frame with a block assist by sophomore Makena Schoene (Seattle, Wash.) and redshirt sophomore Katie Allen (Mokena, Ill.).
The Bulldogs led 3-1 early in the fourth set as the Sycamores struggled with two-straight attack errors. However, it was the final advantage of the night for Drake as Indiana State took control by building a 17-13 lead and extended its margin to 20-13 as the Bulldogs called a timeout. The timeout couldn't slow the Sycamores as they won 25-15 to take the match.
Sophomore setter Chandelle Davidson (Gretna, Neb.) finished with her third consecutive double-double for the Bulldogs with 11 digs and 10 assists. Sophomore Nicole Woods (St. Charles, Ill.) recorded six kills and five blocks, while Allen had four kills and six blocks. As a team, the Bulldogs tallied 14 blocks and six service aces.
Drake travels to Illinois State Saturday (Oct. 18) night with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. against the Redbirds.
