Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – The Drake University volleyball team dropped a Missouri Valley Conference road match at Wichita State, 3-0, on Saturday (Oct. 4) night at Koch Arena.
The Shockers beat the Bulldogs by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-20 to improve their record to 10-6 and 4-2 in MVC action. The loss drops Drake's record to 9-7 and 1-4 in league play.
Sophomore Capris Quaites (Omaha, Neb.) posted solid numbers in the scorebook for the Bulldogs with seven kills, five digs and four blocks. Senior Amanda Platte (Mount Vernon, Iowa) added eight kills, four digs, one block and one assist. Sophomore Chandelle Davidson (Gretna, Neb.) tallied 19 assists and eight digs.
The first set was competitive early as the teams traded points until Wichita State took a 12-8 lead as Drake called its first timeout. Out of the break, the Shockers extended their advantage to 21-13 as the Bulldogs used their final timeout. Wichita State closed out the set with four of the next six points to claim the opening set, 25-15.
Drake raced to an 11-7 lead in the second set as Wichita State had to call the first timeout. Redshirt freshman Taylor Zant (Libertyville, Ill.) extended Drake's lead to 13-12, but Wichita State swung the momentum with four-straight points to go up 16-13. The Shockers later led 18-15 as the Bulldogs used their first timeout of the frame. The timeout couldn't slow Wichita State as it went on to grab set two, 25-21.
Set three featured four lead changes and four score ties. Junior Rebecca Brown (Bentonville, Ark.) connected for her second kill to trim the Bulldogs' deficit to 22-19 late in the frame. However, the Shockers closed out the match with two kills by Ashlyn Driskill to win the set by a score of 25-20.
The Bulldogs return to the Knapp Center for matches next weekend with Southern Illinois on Oct. 10 and Evansville on Oct. 11. First serve for each match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
