DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University volleyball team swept the Indiana State Sycamores, 3-0, on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Knapp Center in front of 308 fans. Drake won by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-19 as the Bulldogs completed their second sweep in the last three matches. The sweep improves Drake's overall record to 11-15 and 3-12 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
“So proud of our team tonight,” said head coach Darrin McBroom. “Everybody stepped up and did what they needed to do. Our block was huge tonight. It really frustrated Indiana State. Everybody executed their part of the game plan to help us get the win."
Drake was led on offense by freshman Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa) and sophomore Makena Schoene (Seattle, Wash.) as each outside hitter smashed 10 kills. Inderski added 10 digs for her 10th career double-double. Schoene added three blocks, and as a team, the Bulldogs tallied 12 blocks.
Sophomore Michelle Thommi (Omaha, Neb.) recorded a match-leading 23 digs to go along with five assists. Sophomore setter Chandelle Davidson (Gretna, Neb.) finished 20 assists, nine digs and one service ace.
The opening set was back-and-forth until Drake forced an Indiana State timeout after the Bulldogs scored two straight points to take an 18-15 lead. The timeout didn't slow Drake's momentum as the Bulldogs claimed the set, 25-20, after a bad set by the Sycamores for the final point.
Set two was controlled by Drake as the Bulldogs never trailed to Indiana State. The Bulldogs tallied a sterling .323 hitting percentage in set two after recording the identical percentage in the first set. Drake cruised to the 25-16 victory in set two.
Drake rallied in the third set as the Bulldogs fell behind early before slowly climbing back by taking a 14-9 lead. After an Indiana State timeout the Sycamores scored one point to move within 14-10, but it would be as close as they would be the rest of the set. Drake closed out the match with a kill by Schoene.
On Sunday, Nov. 16, the Bulldogs welcome the conference leaders, Illinois State, to the Knapp Center for a 2:05 p.m. match. Following the conclusion of the final home match of the 2014 season, the program will honor its three seniors, Halli Meyer (Bettendorf, Iowa), Meredith Moore (Normal, Ill.) and Amanda Platte (Mount Vernon, Iowa).
“It will be nice to recognize each senior tomorrow after getting a great win tonight,” McBroom said. “We are excited to honor each of them for the commitment they have made to Drake. Even through the tough times to get to this point, they have each helped get this program to really start to take off in the direction we want.”
