Box Score CHICAGO – For the second time this season the Drake and Loyola volleyball teams played a five-set match as the Ramblers held on for a 3-2 victory over the Bulldogs Friday (Nov. 21) night at Gentile Arena.
Loyola, in its second win of the season over Drake, won by scores of 21-25, 25-22, 25-13, 18-25 and 15-7 Friday to improve to 9-18 overall and 5-12 in Missouri Valley Conference action. The loss drops Drake to 11-17 on the season and 3-14 in the MVC.
Freshman Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa) led Drake with 10 kills and added 13 digs to tally her 11th career double-double. The Bulldogs front row finished with 14 blocks as freshman Kelly Shute (Dana Point, Calif.) posted a career-high nine.
Drake grabbed early control of the match as the Bulldogs claimed the opening set, 25-21 behind 14 team kills. Loyola answered by taking a back-and-forth second set by a score of 25-22, and then dominated the third set, cruising to a 25-13 decision to go up 2-1 in the match.
In the fourth set, the Bulldogs didn't panic as they slowly pulled away from a tight affair by going up 18-15 as the Ramblers called a timeout. The timeout couldn't slow Drake as the Bulldogs forced a fifth and deciding set with a 25-18 win.
The Bulldogs fell behind 7-1 in the fifth frame as they were forced to use their second and final timeout. The break couldn't help Drake as it slowly ran out of steam trying to complete the rally attempt as Loyola pulled away, taking the fifth set, 15-7, and the match.
Drake plays its final match of the 2014 season as the Bulldogs visit Bradley on Saturday (Nov. 23). First serve against the Braves is scheduled for 7 p.m.
