Sixteen Bulldogs Named To All-PFL Teams

SAINT LOUIS, Mo – Sixteen members of the Drake University football team have been selected to the All-Pioneer Football League teams as voted on by the league's 11 head coaches.

The Bulldogs had three student-athletes selected to the first team, four to the second team and nine earned honorable-mention honors.
Headlining the All-PFL squads was Drake fifth-year senior Matt Acree (Shawnee, Kan.). The defensive lineman was the lone unanimous selection to the All-PFL first team, garnering a first-team vote on every ballot. Acree recorded 12.5 tackles for loss and a PFL-best 8.5 sacks in addition to his 29 tackles and two blocked kicks. His fellow defensive lineman, Brett Park (Olivette, Mo.), also garnered first-team honors after making 40 stops as a redshirt senior. Park was second on the team and fifth in the PFL in sacks with 5.5 and 7.5 tackles for loss. Drake had one representative on the offensive first team in fifth-year offensive lineman Troy Whitmer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.). Whitmer started every game at left guard after earning second-team All-PFL honors in 2013.

A pair of Drake offensive linemen also populated the All-PFL second team with juniors Aaron Melton (Castle Rock, Colo.) and John McMahon (Algonquin, Ill.) earning the honor for the first time in their respective careers. Two Drake defenders also earned second-team honors with John Hugunin (Oswego, Ill.) and Brad Duwe (Dubuque, Iowa) being voted to the squad. Hugunin, a team captain, helped lead a defense that ranked 18th nationally. He finished the season second on the team in tackles with 89 in nine games, including four for a loss. Duwe tied for the team lead in interceptions with two and broke up a team-high eight passes to go along with his 40 tackles.

Drake's nine All-PFL honorable mention selections included five offensive players and four defenders. Offensive lineman Jack Beck (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) was joined by wide receiver Michael Hudson (Urbandale, Iowa), quarterback Andy Rice (Stevens Point, Wis.), tight end Eric Saubert (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and running back Conley Wilkins (Overland Park, Kan.)

The Bulldogs All-PFL honorable mention defenders included the team's leading tackler in linebacker Taylor Coleman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.), cornerback Drew Ormseth (Lake In The Hills, Ill.) and safety Bob Quilico, Jr. (Schaumburg, Ill.). Mack Marrin (Mendota Heights, Minn.), who on Monday was named the PFL Freshman Defensive Player of the Year, also garnered All-PFL honorable mention accolades.

Ten of the 11 league members had at least one student-athlete named First-Team All-PFL, league-champion San Diego leading the way with six first-team honorees. The Toreros also led the league with 11 student-athletes named to both the league's first and second teams.

In addition to the 58 student-athletes recognized on the league's first and second teams, 74 student-athletes received honorable mention recognition.

The Academic All-PFL team, highlighted by the league's first Scholar-Athlete of the Year, will be released Wednesday, concluding the league's awards week.
