The Drake University men's basketball team plays its second straight road game on Wednesday evening when it travels to Missouri State for its annual meeting on the Bears' home court. Tipoff at JQH Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the game being broadcast on ESPN3.
In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Drake sank a season-high 14 three-pointers to prevail, 84-74, in the Knapp Center on Jan. 29 in a back-and-forth contest that featured 17 lead changes. That three-point barrage was the eighth highest tally in program history and junior Richard Carter (Detroit, Mich.) played one of his best games in a Drake uniform with 23 points and a career-high 11 assists.
The Bulldogs will face a Missouri State team that returns home following a two-game road swing with a 16-8 overall record and a 6-6 mark in MVC action. The Bears have won four of their last six games with one of those losses coming at Drake on Jan. 29. The Bears are a near-perfect 11-1 at home this season with the lone loss coming to MVC leading Wichita State. Jarmar Gulley leads the team in both scoring and rebounding with 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game for a squad that averages 71.7 points per game.
MSU's home-court advantage has been particularly strong against Drake as the Bulldogs have just one win in Springfield in 22 tries, a 73-63 win on Feb. 21, 2001.
However, this year's Drake team brings with it an offense that leads The Valley and is 14th nationally in three-point accuracy at 39.9 percent. The sharpshooting trio of Jordan Daniels (Fontana, Calif.), Aaron Hawley (Rogers, Ark.) and Chris Caird (Daventry, England) are shooting a combined 46.7 percent against MVC competition this season.
Following Wednesday's game, the Bulldogs return to the Knapp Center to host Loyola. The first meeting in the Knapp Center as conference foes between the two programs is scheduled to tipoff at 7:05 p.m.
