McDonald Leads Bulldogs On Day One At Rice Intercollegiate

HOUSTON, Texas - Sophomore Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) fired a 36-hole total of 146, including a season-low 71, to pace the Drake men's golf team to a 611 (313-298) scorecard in the Bulldogs' spring debut at the Rice Intercollegiate on Monday (Feb. 17).

“As I expected, the guys were a little rusty to start play today as it has been nearly four months since we've played a competitive round,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “Rusty not just from a physical standpoint, but also from a mental and course management aspect. I think everyone settled in after six to eight holes and it was nice that the guys each bounced back and played better in the second round and I'm happy with that.”

Every Bulldog lowered his score over the second 18 holes of the tournament, including rounds of 71, 75, 76, 76 and 80, respectively, from McDonald, junior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa), senior Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and senior Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa).

McDonald will enter Tuesday's (Feb. 18) final round tied for 11th place. Following him in the standings is Leland, who registered a 153 (77-76) total to stand tied for 39th place.

“Will (McDonald) was very solid from start to finish today and he has an opportunity for a strong finish tomorrow.” Lewis explained.

Two strokes off Leland's tournament pace is Worley, who posted a 36-hole mark of 155 (80-75), to finish tied for 56th.

Garnering scorecards of 157 (81-76) and 162 (82-80), respectively, to conclude their efforts in 66th and 78th place, was Steele and Ohl.

“I told the guys that based on our second-round score that if we can play that well again tomorrow that we can be in contention for a strong finish,” said Lewis. “It was a nice step today and tomorrow our goal is to continue our improvement from round two to three.  It was a long day today and everyone is in a positive and upbeat mood heading into our final round.”

The Rice Intercollegiate concludes with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday (Feb. 17).
